With almost three meters of wingspan, it is the largest bird of prey in Europe, with a dark brown plumage with blackish spots. Both the neck and the head are completely devoid of feathers, presenting down on the top of the head.

It is a forest species that nests mainly in pine groves in the Mediterranean forest.

It is difficult to differentiate males and females with the naked eye, since their appearance and size are practically similar. While the youngest specimens show an almost black plumage.
